Vulnerability Is a Strength

On vulnerability as a strength

What does it mean to be vulnerable, and how is vulnerability a strength?

Every time you post on social media, share something you wrote, or expose some part of yourself to the world, you are practicing vulnerability.

Vulnerability does not mean oversharing or revealing too much of ourselves.

It means choosing to speak with honesty, intention, and presence.

And when you look at it that way, it’s easy to see how vulnerability is actually a strength, not a weakness.

One thing I love about Toastmasters meetings is Table Topics: one- to two-minute impromptu speeches that are unscripted, genuine, and often surprisingly meaningful.

Each time someone gives a Table Topics speech, it’s an opportunity to practice being vulnerable in the moment.

At Gilbert Toastmasters, I was asked:

What or who is the greatest love of your life?

This question took me back to childhood, to growing up in Tucson, to what I thought I understood about love, and to what becoming a parent eventually taught me.

Since that first moment, the greatest love of my life has been my children.
